The Problem with Fairy Tales

I was going to resist the temptation of talking about Kim Kardashian's divorce all together. I made it through the first day when  Ryan Seacrest broke the news on twitter and #thingslongerthankimsmarriage became a trending topic. I made it through the second day when Mashable recapped the most dramatic tweets in reaction to the end of her 72 day sabbatical marriage. But today when she published a blog post about the split in her own words I decided that I was finally allowed to open my mouth. Of all the statements she makes the one that I highlighted below annoys me the most.

Falling in love is easy. Staying in love is hard. Fairy tales emphasize the falling in love part, the part where you have sex twice a day and get butterflies in your stomach when you see that person's name in your inbox. But that's not really the part of love that needs romancing. The more significant part of a relationship comes after the altar and after you ride off into the sunset, or in the case of my favorite movie, a lawn mower (bonus points if you know I'm talking about Ronnie Miller). And that's the problem with fairy tales, they place importance on the wrong part of a relationship and end where the real story begins. Damn you Snow White and Taylor Swift!

And you know how I feel about the whole "Prince Charming" fairy tale. xx

  3. I agree that people forget that the real fairy tale is supposed to be working towards "...and they lived happily ever after."

P.S. I can still recall my sappy teen joy when watching that final scene in the dark theater.

  4. Every year I say I'm going to buy a white suede suit and spill wine on it as my Halloween costume. next year: I'm doing it.

  5. I have to say... I still feel a little bad for her... by 30, she should probably know that love is not a fairy tale... but still, such a public break up cannot be fun to go through...

  6. Kim is such a lovely girl, she does look like a porn actress with those huge knockers though. She could have made it in the porn industry just the same.

  7. one thing that could ruin a marriage is our fantasy of having a perfect wedding. When cinderella got her happily ever after, you closed the book but their story did not end there.
